Spinal and Joint Injections

For concerns related to spinal stability and for pain or functional limitation arising from the hip, shoulder or elbow, targeted injection options may be considered after clinical assessment. An intra-articular injection means placing an appropriate medicine into a joint; spinal and joint procedures are planned only after diagnosis, examination and imaging findings are assessed together.

Planning and targeting

The purpose of a procedure may be to obtain diagnostic information, support control of pain and inflammation, or facilitate participation in a rehabilitation programme. The medicine, anatomical area and method are not selected online; they are determined through physician assessment.

Approach to treatment

• Review of history, examination, imaging and current medicines
• Consideration of image guidance such as ultrasound or fluoroscopy in suitable cases
• Individualised application under sterile conditions according to the target area
• Post-procedure follow-up and an integrated exercise/rehabilitation plan

Safety and suitability

Risks such as bleeding, infection, nerve injury, a temporary increase in pain, medicine reactions and site-specific risks are explained before the procedure. Blood-thinning medicine use, diabetes, active infection, pregnancy and accompanying conditions are considered when deciding suitability.
