Prolotherapy is a complementary procedure in which an irritant solution, commonly containing dextrose, is injected into selected ligament, tendon or periarticular areas. It aims to create a controlled local response in an attempt to improve pain and function.
When May It Be Considered?
It may be considered alongside standard treatment options for selected chronic tendon- or ligament-related pain and joint complaints. Research findings vary by condition, and evidence for low-back pain is conflicting. Tissue regeneration, permanent recovery or improvement after a fixed number of sessions cannot be guaranteed.
Treatment and Safety
The diagnosis and target area are determined by examination, with imaging used when necessary. Temporary pain, stiffness, swelling or bruising may follow injection. Infection, bleeding and injury to nerves or surrounding tissue are less common but important risks. Active infection, bleeding disorders, pregnancy, allergies and current medication are reviewed beforehand; medication should not be stopped without medical advice.
