Reflexology is a complementary approach based on applying pressure to selected areas, usually on the feet and sometimes on the hands. It is commonly used to support relaxation and a sense of wellbeing.
Limits of the Evidence
Reflexology may help some people relax or manage selected symptoms, but research findings are limited and inconsistent. It has not been shown that specific points on the feet directly treat internal organs. Reflexology does not diagnose or treat neurological, hormonal, psychiatric or other systemic diseases and must not replace standard medical care.
Treatment and Safety
Pressure, duration and target areas are selected according to individual sensitivity. Treatment may be unsuitable where there is an open wound, infection, acute injury, suspected fracture, severe circulatory impairment or marked sensory loss in the foot. Excessive pressure that causes pain should not be used.
